2011
reunion date
cancelled
|
|
Hello family. The 2011 Salaices family reunion is cancelled. The purpose of these annual reunions was to give family a time to get to know each other. However, after 17 fun years of hosting the reunions in northern California, Phil and Marti are giving up hosting this event as recent family participation doesnt support the effort. We do this with sad hearts. If you want to help host a Salaices reunion in 2012 in your area, please see the article, "Salaices reunion in your area?" (bottom of this page). |

2010
reunion report
|
| Folks came from Northern California, Carson City NV, and Framingham MA. A compact but FUN group gathered to play games, eat great food, and generally have fun together. We also celebrated Emily Ammerman's birthday (great-granddaughter of Phillip/Felipe Salaices). Many thanks to all that helped with events |

Richard William Salaices (grandson of Elias Miguel "Mike;" son of Michael Elias Salaices) and his fiancée Theresa traveled all the way from Framingham, MA, to attend the reunion for the first time. Rich and his nearly-grown children were born and raised in the Northeast. He owns a large landscaping business - June being a prime time - but he wanted to reconnect with his family. He's hoping to return to the 2011 reunion. |

| John Elias Salaices (grandson of Elias Miguel "Mike;" son of Arthur John Salaices) and his three sons - Nicholas, Zachary, and Joshua - also attended. John was born in California but raised in the Northeast. The kids jump right in to meet and play with their cousins. The next day, we went to meet John's wife, Kimberly, and their daughters Emma and Brooke. John and Kim are both in real estate and are fun hosts. John and Rich hadn't seen each other for years and really enjoyed catching up. | |

| 2009 reunion report |
|
We think 2009 was the hottest weather we've ever had for the reunion! As bad as the heat was, the company was wonderful. Family came from Northern California and Carson City, NV. COLD beverages were very popular with everyone, and the ice cream bar vendor was just about mobbed when he came by. With lots of little ones and young people, the games were well attended. Even the older youth enjoyed wearing the "gold" medals they won. Everyone enjoyed the piñatas, especially the "elders' piñata - which all ages gathers to watch and cheer. |

Richard Carrasco (son of Esther Salaices) hosted his traditional horseshoe tournament for young people and adults. We women were thrilled that we had our first female champions - Jamie Carrasco (granddaughter of Esther Salaices) and her friend. Way to go girls! |

| Benny Ysaias Salaices - 1928-2009 | ||
|
Known as Uncle Chayo (a childhood nickname) to his nieces and nephews, Benny Salaices passed away Sept. 27, 2009, of congestive heart failure. Born March 21, 1928, he was named Ysaias Salaices on after his father. However, his father called him Benny; he adapted the name Benny Ysaias Salaices. He was one of the five children born to Juan Ysaias (Ysaias Manuel) Salaices and Felipa (Silva-Arredondo) Salaices while they lived in Kansas. Benny served in the Navy in the 1940s and eventually retired after 25 years with Leslie Salt Company. |

of José Gabriel Salaices-Puentes. He is third cousin of Juan Ysaias
(Ysaias Manuel) Salaices. Both Toribio and Ysaias are descents of Manuel
Geronimo Salaices (born abt. 1760).

| Toribio Salaices was the first relative we met on our very first trip to the Juan Aldama (Zacatecas) area to do genealogy research. He was standing outside of his gate when we (Noé Salaices-Arredondo, Phil Salaices, and Marti Conger) drove into Ojitos, next to Juan Aldama. He had a big smile and was very friendly, thrilled to meet cousins from the US and from Miguel Auza, ZAC. We also met his wife Alejandrina and his daughter Amelia. | ||

| José Luis Aguayo Álvarez - 1947-2010 | ||
|
Professor José Luis Aguayo Álvarez, passed away at age 63 on February 21, 2010, from congestive heart failure. He is our beloved co-author of "Salaices - The History & the Family." José Luis was buried in Jiménez, CHIH, (near Salaices, CHIH) next to his parents. As they always do when they pass through Chihuahua City, Phil Salaices and Marti Conger visited with José Luis in late January, 2010. Though he was, as ever, the ultimate host, they did not believe his protests that he was "feeling fine." Over the years it took to write the Salaices book and after, José Luis became Phil and Marti's "hermano del corazón" (brother of the heart), and they miss him dearly. |

| José Luis was born in Ejido El Porvenir, across the road from ex-Hacienda de Salaices, CHIH. He graduated from the Escuela Normal Rural de Salaices (the state teachers' college in Salaices) in 1967 as a teacher. He completed graduate school at Normal Superior José E. Medrano, specializing in history. After he retired in 1998, he dedicated himself to journalism, literature,
and history, as well as to various cultural and political activities.
He was an award-winning writer of historical books and poems, literature,
essays, and cultural studies. He was also a collaborating journalist
for the El Heraldo de Chihuahua (an important newspaper in Mexico).
